A Whole New Era Of Same-Sex Family Law

The June 26, 2015, decision by the United States Supreme Court making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states was probably the most significant change in family law ever.

It will eventually mean that there is no legal difference between LGBT couples and other couples. All legal matters involving straight couples — marriage, divorce, property division, adoption, child support, spousal support and child custody — will now apply to same-sex couples, too.

But some matters still need to be addressed. People who were in domestic partnerships, who moved to Ohio from other states, may want to consider terminating those agreements. Couples who signed cohabitation agreements may also wish to terminate them.

Finally, everyone deserves protection from domestic violence. We have served LGBT families in this way in the past. We are committed to assisting individuals in need of civil protection orders in the future.

And that's the way it should be.
